City Wine Explores The Cal-Italian Connection

She'll tell the tale of the Italian immigrants and their journey to our West Coast and talk about the renaissance going on in Italy. You'll taste barbera, sangiovese, nebbiolo, and more. Hot appetizers will be served to accompany the wines.

Barb hails from Winebow Imports of New York. Winebow is perhaps the most influential Italian wine importer in the United States.

Cabernet Franc

It seems odd that one red grape and one white grape would produce something as masculine as cabernet sauvignon. It's even more interesting when you consider the red grape in the equation is the softly tannic, lighter bodied cabernet franc. Cabernet franc and sauvignon blanc are the parent grapes of cabernet sauvignon.

Cabernet franc is one of the five Bordeaux varietals, along with merlot, petit verdot, malbec, and cabernet sauvignon. Although grown throughout Bordeaux, the area known as the "right-bank" is where cabernet franc struts its stuff. These 'right-bank' merlot blends are believed to be some of the best red wines in the world. Names like Château Cheval Blanc and Château Pétrus both contain the herbaceous, fragrant, softer acid, less tannic 'cab franc.'
Top

Cab franc is generally used as a secondary grape, paired up with merlot and/or cabernet sauvignon. Since it is harvested early, many winemakers believe that growing cab franc along side cabernet sauvignon is a failsafe against losing an entire vintage to bad weather. Cab franc is used to soften cabernet sauvignon, but at the same time it contributes more structure to a merlot based wine.

In Chinon, in France's Loire Valley, cabernet franc is adored and featured in a solo bottling. Cabernet franc is very similar in flavor and structure to cabernet sauvignon. Its nose is more aromatic with distinctive notes of violets, spiced plums, and fresh herbs. On the palate, the herbaceous qualities follow through while the wine hints of those cabernet sauvignon flavors we've all come to love.
