Tuscans make unconventional wines
The use of certain geographic names on wine labels is very legislated and controlled in Europe. You can't call it Burgundy unless it is made from 100 % pinot noir or 100% chardonnay at very specific yields and alcohol levels. The grapes must be grown within certain geographic boundaries, called an appellation. Like wise a wine cannot be called Chianti unless it is made within the appellation of Chianti. Chianti can be 100% sangiovese, but can also contain up to 15% canaiolo nero, trebbiano, malvasia, cabernet sauvignon or merlot by law.
Smaller areas with the ability to grow better grapes are allowed to use a more specific, more desirable name on the label. The more defined the area, the more esteemed the appellation. Most Europeans follow the formula and label their wines with the most prestigious geographic name they are allowed to use. In Italy this appellation system is referred to as the Denominazione di Origine Controllata designation, or DOC.
A few decades ago producers in Chianti started to challenge the established recipe. Even though producers were making reds wines, usually with a large amount of sangiovese in the blend, they were not allowed to use the 'Chianti DOC' appellation on their label. They were restricted to the largest geographic area available, Tuscany or as the natives call it, Toscana. They were also forced to use the lower quality designation IGT, a step down from the DOC system.
This dissension didn't obscure these new wines. The American and English markets embraced these new Italian blends and didn't miss the DOC appellation. The more popular the IGT Toscana wines became, the more non-conformist recipes were introduced to the market. Although they are labeled as mere table wines, there is usually a marked quality to these IGT Toscana reds. Most of these winemakers, often Chianti producers too, are still using a considerable amount of sangiovese in their heretic blends. Many of them are not afraid to blend two French varieties together under the Toscana name, although they may say a little prayer first and ask for their ancestors forgiveness.
